Meeting this Saturday, December 11, 2010

From Lora McCabe....

Hello everybody!

I am late, as usual. This month's meeting will take place at my house (instead
of Jann's) at 390 Hidden Hill Rd, Mammoth Spring, AR. We will read the minutes
at that time so that everybody remembers what a great time we had last time.
There will be plenty of good food and good company. Please feel free to bring
desserts or drinks. Also, please forward this to anybody that might be
interested in our draft animals/horses/donkeys, etc.

(note: directions omitted)

Hope to see you this Saturday at 12 noon.

Lora

Late post about a great meeting - June 19, 2010

On June 19th, Al and Kirsten hosted a wagon ride and potluck lunch at their farm, Black Bell Acres, west of Alton.

It was a hot day, but great for learning to harness and drive. Attendees included Steve Driscoll, Lora McCabe and her daughter, Ariel, Jan Ramey, her husband, Harold, and their neighbor, Allen. Diana Wallace served as photographer to document the day.

The hands-on projects included harnessing the horses to two different wagons, the light wagon which was used to demonstrate logging and the large party wagon to take everyone for a ride.

After the rides, the horses were unhitched and rinsed off.

Another ride is scheduled for October 16th. Ya'll come!

More pictures from June 19...

September 18, 2010 Chuckwagon Cookoff

Al and Kirsten went to the Chuckwagon Cookoff in Mountain View on September 18.
It was a nice day and pretty neat to see how meals have been prepared for cowboys in the past.

We also met folks with a nice team of Belgian draft horses. Roger Lee came down as well.

Many people enjoyed the big horses, took pictures and got wagon rides. We promoted the club, made new friends and connections.

(Pictures to be added when I get them)

Minutes of August 28, 2010 Meeting

Ozarks Draft Horse Association Meeting Minutes
August 28, 2010
Jim and Lora McCabe’s House
Mammoth Springs, AK

Attendance: Kirsten(vice president) & Al Kosinski, Margie Paskert (secretary/treasurer), Ira King, Jann & Harold Ramey, Lora & Jim McCabe

Meeting Opened by: Kirsten Kosinski, vice-president

Secretary's Report: The minutes from last month’s meeting where handed out and gone over briefly by Margie.

Treasurer’s Report: The balance in the checking account is $490.31. There has been no activity since the last meeting. Reported by Margie.

President’s Report: (Given by Kirsten as there is no current president.) Steve Driscoll is unable to attend today because he is headed to Montana for a week long driving school. Go Steve! Walter Tubbs is unable to attend due to recent surgery. Kirsten acknowledged Alice Kasper’s fine work on our blog.

Old Business: 1. Lora has not had time to research non-profit status, but hopes to get to it this next month.
2. Nothing is happening on researching by-laws.
3. Margie handed out a list of members (attached). Please check it over and send any corrections to Margie. There are some names on the list who are probably not members. Yearly membership renewal notices will get sent out in September, so by November the list should be more accurate.
4. No-one appears to be interested in attending the Southern Draft Horse Progress Days in Virginia in September.
5. The September meeting will be at Steve Driscoll’s in Brandsville/Koshkonong on Sept 25. There will be a barbeque and Ira volunteered to do a horse breaking demo on Steve’s horse, which Steve knows nothing about yet. So, we’ll see. We will definitely be doing something with the big animals. Margie will send out a flyer as soon as the details are finalized.
6. The October meeting will be at the Kosinski’s in Alton. The date is not set yet, but will most likely be late in the month.
7. The Nov/December meeting is still scheduled to be at the Ramey’s in Alton.

New Business: 1. Elections were held. Ira King is the new president. Both Kirsten and Jann Ramey are vice presidents. Margie is the secretary/treasurer. We hope to put Steve Driscoll in some type of P.R. position, but we were kind enough not to elect him when he was not there.
2. We will be having a booth at the Ozarks Sustainability Festival on Sunday, Sept. 12, in West Plains. We hope to get the word out about our club and maybe get some new members. Jann has made a Power Point presentation to show on her laptop. We will be talking to people and handing out flyers (which Margie volunteered to make) and cards. Kirsten will get the banner from Steve. Margie will bring a table and covering. If anyone has a canopy we can use, please get in touch with Kirsten, Jann, or Margie. Lora and Margie volunteered to set up and man the booth for the first half of the day. Jann volunteered for the second half of the day. If anyone else is available to help out, please get in touch with one of us.
3. The Chuck Wagon Dinner in Mountain Home, AR, is on the 17th. 18th, and 19th. Roger Lee will probably bring his team, but only if he has help. Volunteers were called for. Ira was volunteered, but might not be able to make it. Kirsten and Al volunteered, and Lora and Jim might also help out. If anybody is interested, well, you know who to call.
4. The Walnut Festival is in Alton on the first Saturday in October. Margie will check into the cost for a booth. If we do have a booth, Margie will open it and Kirsten will close it. We welcome any other volunteers to help out.
5. The Timberfest in Doniphan is the second weekend in October. Kirsten wants the club to be there. She will check into booth costs. If we have a booth we will need volunteers.
6. We will vote on a new name for the club at the next meeting, so put on your thinking caps and come up with some ideas. We want a name that lets folks know that we are not just about horses.
7. We voted to sell the rest of the club’s T-shirts for $10 each to generate some money. As we expect to have a new name after the next meeting, the current t-shirts are out of vogue.
8. The Boone County Draft Horse Sale in Columbia, MO, is Sept. 18 & 19.

August 24, 2010

This is a reminder that we have our monthly Ozarks Draft Horse Association meeting this coming Saturday, August 28. It is at 1 Pm at Jim and Lora McCabe's home in Mammoth Spring. We will be having a potluck lunch, so please bring a dish. Things are heating up in the club and we have lots to discuss, so please be there.

Among the items to discuss and/or vote on are:

1. Elections for officers will be held.
2. We will be having a booth at the Ozarks' Sustainability Festival in West Plains in Sept, so we need to discuss this and have volunteers sign up to man the booth.
3. We need to plan fund raising events/opportunities.
4. Do we want to have a booth at Timberfest in Doniphan in October? What about the Walnut Festival In Alton in Oct?
5. We will also be voting on a name change for the Association.

If you have something you would like us to discuss at the meeting, please send your ideas to Kirsten (2percherons@gmail.com) or me.

Thanks, and hope to see you there!

July 2010 Meeting

Ozarks Draft Horse Association Meeting Minutes
July 24, 2010
Jim and Lora McCabe’s House
Mammoth Springs, AK

Attendance: Kirsten (vice-president) & Al Kosisnski, Margie (secretary/treasurer) & Ron Lennington, Jim & Lora McCabe, Wesley Pate, Ira King, Keith Temple, Harold & Jann Ramey, Steve Driscoll, all members, and Walter & Rachel Tubbs, guests

Meeting Opened by: Kirsten Kosinski, vice-president

Secretary's Report: Minutes from last meeting were handed out accepted as read.

Treasurer’s Report: $490.31 balance in checking account

President’s Report: The Logging Demo Day at Kirsten and Al’s farm got rained out, but about 8 people showed up anyway. Ira demonstrated horse logging between rain showers. There was loads of interest, so this might be repeated in the fall.
The Work Day on June 19 drew a small crowd and went well.
We need to elect officers, and will plan to do so at the next meeting. We need people who are really willing to do the work. Kirsten has been doing the lion’s share of getting this club going and needs a president or vice president who will take some of the burden off of her.

Old Business: Dennis Goodall is getting out of draft horses for now and is selling all his horses and equipment. He did not build the wagon we had voted for at the last meeting. We discussed if we really needed a wagon, and decided to drop it for now.

New Business:
Volunteers for future meeting places were called for. Here is the list:
August 28, 2010, at Jim & Lora McCabes’ home, Mammoth Springs
September at Steve Driscoll’s in Brandsville/Koshkonong (Probably the last weekend in Sept.) He is planning a meeting, barbeque, and draft animal demonstration.
October at Al & Kirsten Kosinski’s. Alton. Meeting and draft animal demo’s.
November/December at Harold & Jann Ramey’s, Alton.
Lora McCabe will research filing for non-profit status.
Lora also volunteered to print flyers and such for the association. Margie can e-mail to Lora and she will print to save the association money for toner and paper.
Kirsten mentioned that we probably should have by-laws, and it was voted on to pursue this. Walter Tubbs has a copy of the Arkansas Draft Horse Association (now defunct) by-laws. He will try to find them.
September was voted on to be the start of the association’s fiscal year. Membership dues will be renewable at this time. Margie will send out reminders. It was voted that any new members who joined from June through August would not need to renew until the following year.
New Business, cont: A list of members was requested. Margie & Kirsten are working on it, but are lacking information from some members. Margie will have a list ready for the next meeting.
Kirsten mentioned that there will be a Southern Draft Horse Progress Days event in Virginia in September. If enough people are interested in going we could rent a van and travel together to save money. Get in touch with Kirsten if interested.
There will be hitch classes at the Ozarks Empire Fair on July 30 & 31.
The Boone County Draft Horse Sale is Sept. 15 – 18 in Columbia, MO.

Election of officers was discussed. An election will be held at the next meeting. Ira King was nominated for both President (by Keith Temple) and Vice President (by Jann Ramey).
There was much discussion about why people are members of the association and what the association is for. In general, it was agreed that the association should be working to preserve the knowledge of draft animals and to pass it on.

Rural Missouri - article about mule logging

April 24, the scheduled field demonstration day for Ira King, turned out to have unexpectedly bad weather. Many of the people who had expressed an interest in the event were unable to attend.

Eight guests did show up, plus Ira King, the local horse logger. A private forester attended and discussed the methods of determining the age of standing timber.

Ira uses a d-ring harness which keeps the weight off the horses neck. He also uses a logging cart he built himself. At this demonstration, Ira used Kirsten and Al's draft horses and his own harness.

The demonstrations took place between thundershowers. Roger Lee cut the selected trees, and Ira and the team skidded the logs.

We plan to have another demo in the fall because we had so much interest this time. Hopefully, the weather will be more cooperative!

Thank you to all who attended!

In other news, we have a new Secretary for the Ozarks Draft Horse Association. Margie Paskert has agreed to take on the position. Thank you, Margie!

Ira King's Suffolk mare had a colt named Hickory this spring. The sire is Suffolk/American Saddlebred stallion.

Interesting "Stuff"

Kirsten, Al, and their team did some log pulling recently, with the assistance of a couple of guests.

From Kirsten's email:
We had a little log skidding here at the farm.
Ira King the horselogger came out, and we all took turns driving.
Here is a picture of Ron Lennington (student driver) pulling a large log.

Minutes of February Meeting

Ozarks Draft Horse Association Meeting Minutes
February 27, 2010
Jim and Lora McCabe’s House
Mammoth Springs, AK

Attendance: Kirsten Kosinski, Vice President, Margie Paskert, Secretary/Treasurer, and members Steve Driscoll, Mike Moore, Joanna Burgin, Ira King, Jim Mc Cabe, Lora Mc Cabe, Ron Lennington. Guests: Jenny Underwood and two sons, Matt Driscoll

Meeting Opened by: Kirsten Kosinski at 1:50 PM

Secretary's Report: Margie Paskert is the new Secretary/Treasurer and did not yet have anything to report.

President’s Report: Dennis Goodall was unable to attend.
Steve Driscoll conveyed several messages from Dennis.
1. The club currently does not have a checking account and needs one. Steve suggested that Dennis, Kirsten, Steve, and possibly Margie should all be signers on the account. Only one signature would be required on checks. Bank of Thayer would probably be our best bet as it has branches in Thayer, West Plains, and Alton, which is convenient for all potential signers.
2. The club currently has approximately $500 collected from dues.

Old Business: None.

New Business: Steve Driscoll also conveyed that Dennis is willing to build a wagon for the club. He can get running gears for $125 - $150. Dennis would provide the labor at no cost. The club would pay for all materials. It was not clear exactly how much the materials would cost. The wagon would have our name on it and could be used by members for parades, etc. The idea was put to vote and passed unanimously.
Kirsten asked for volunteers for homes for future meetings. April’s meeting is already set at Al and Kirsten Kosinski’s house. Ira King will be demonstrating logging with his horses. Joanna Burgin volunteered her home for the March meeting, but after some discussion it was decided that the McCabes would host the March meeting again as they are located more centrally.
Ideas for future meetings were called for. Inviting a 4H club or a homeschool group was suggested. Having speakers and/or demonstrations, like harnessing, were also suggested.
There is going to be a coggins clinic in Salem on March 13.

Meeting Adjourned at: Approximately 3 PM.

Please Note! There will be no March meeting of the Ozarks Draft Horse Association. Stay tuned for an announcement of the April meeting date, time, and location.

Homemade Logging Equipment

Ira King is logging with 18 yr old Lady, a gray Percheron mare, and Molly, a Suffolk mare.
He made his own cart, tongue and eveners. He logs with a New England D Ring harness.
