I realize this is a time conflict, as this sale is on the same Saturday as the club meeting, but there is a large Saddle, Tack, and Horse auction just outside of Alton, starting at 10:00 AM.
The auction is Gary Hensley's horses and tack and horse "stuff." He did not have driving animals, but he was well known for his horses and horsemanship.
There are 15 saddles for sale, 50 bridles, a 1050 John Deere 4 wheel drive tractor, a 2020 John Deere, corral panels, gates, a ha ring, water tanks, dog pens, some small tools, and two black powder pistols.
The sale flyer also says other horse items too numerous to list.
Horses listed for auction:
1 six year old blue papered Fox Trotting mare
2 six year old registered Fox Trotting mares
1 seven year old Fox Trotting gelding
1 thirteen year old mare
From Alton, take P Highway 2 miles. Sale is on the left.

Notes from Meeting for July 2011
One thing for sure, we draft horse enthusiasts can sure cook! We had a wonderful pot luck meeting in July, and it was a gastronomic event. Several of us followed a Mexican food theme, but the offerings were delightfully balanced by fruit salad and goat cheese.
Vice President Kirsten Kosinski called the meeting to order and thanked Sherri and Robert for hosting the meeting in their beautiful home.
Unfortunately, we had no minutes from the last meeting or a treasurer's report. There was a short discussion of assets owned by the club (a yoke and evener). Steve may purchase them. There is also a double tree.
New member Leza Smith was made most welcome. She has two mini horses that are cart trained and is looking for a larger horse.
A lengthy discussion of the purpose and long term outlook of the club was held. Keith suggested that there are two types of members: active and passive. Some members don't have draft horses. Some members expressed their expectations for the club as a whole, hoping for more education and horse related activities, such as holding a drive, having a farrier talk to the clup, round pen training classes, and hitching instruction.
On the short term, the outrageously hot weather has precluded the likelyhood of an August meeting. The September meeting is scheduled for Sept 24th at St. Michael's Nursery in Brandesville. It will address round pen training and ground driving. Please invite anyone you know with an interest in ANY type of draft animal to this meeting.
Steve asked the pertinent questions - What do we want to do? With so few active members, do we want to continue holding meetings? Do we want to continue to have dues paid? Leza commented on the relationship between dues paying and the psychological value one sees in the organization.
After these discussions, the meeting was adjourned.

Not a "little" red wagon, but it's for sale
Asking $900
It has an attached ladder on the back and a bench on each side for people to sit on with cushions to match the ones Jerry is sitting on. As far as I know, there is nothing wrong with it. It has brakes, and the tires are good. We are not going to try and bring it to Texas, so we left it in a friends barn in Ava. If anyone is interested, tell them to email us (wolfe1@getgoin.net) or give us a call at 956-423-1326. Thanks so much.
Annette Wolf

Halter Training An Unbroken Filly
Note: you can click on each picture to see it in a bigger format
This is an untrained filly, not broke to lead. We will be using her in this demonstration.
Keith Temple haltered the filly in the barn, then brought her to the pen for training.
Makin' a loop. Uh, oh. That's calf roper lingo, not draft horse!
Moving slowly to allow the filly to adjust to the feel of the rope.
Filly with the rope in position on the hindquarters.
Gently pull the rope and halter together.
Starting to pull on the hindquarters to get the horse moving forward.
